Introduction

Why am I so angry? Sometimes people flash in anger and other times people have smoldering anger that lasts and lasts. If you find yourself fighting anger and losing, then you can find help in the word of God. Jesus Christ not only saved you at the moment you were born from above, but He also baptized you with the Holy Spirit. You have been sealed with the Holy Spirit. He will never leave you or forsake you, just like Jesus. To overcome anger, we may begin by understanding some of the ways anger works in our lives.

 

Cain Anger

Adam and Eve had children, including Cain and Abel. Abel offered a sacrifice from the flock to Yahweh. Cain offered the first fruit of the ground to Yahweh as an offering. Yahweh had regard for Abel’s offering, but no regard for Cain’s offering. So Cain became very angry. Yahweh asked Cain, “Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen? If you do well, you will be lifted up. And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door; and its desire is for you, and you must master it.” Cain then killed his brother, Abel. 

The anger of Cain arose because Yahweh accepted the sacrifice of Abel, but disregarded the sacrifice of Cain. Focusing solely upon the anger, however, overlooks the sin problem at work in Cain. Yahweh not only disregarded the sacrifice of Cain, but Yahweh also warned Cain to master sin. Yahweh knows all about sin and how it works in people. Cain had an immediate flash of anger and his countenance fell. Immediately Yahweh asked Cain why he was angry (“חָ֣רָה“)?  Yahweh continued: “If you do well (“תֵּיטִיב֙“), your countenance will be lifted up.” Yahweh explained that Cain could now offer a sacrifice like Abel, from the flock, and his countenance would be lifted. He would be happy. Yahweh also explained the consequence of not doing well. “If you will not do well (“תֵיטִ֔יב“), then sin is crouching at the door; and its desire is for you, but you must master it.”  The spiritual battle had been joined for Cain. He was now going to make a decision, even while his anger still burned. The remedy for the anger of Cain was to do well, and offer a sacrifice pleasing to God. If Cain did not do well, then sin was crouching at the door. Many people do not realize that every time they get angry, sin is crouching at the door ready to consume them like they were a sweet morsel. Yahweh also promised that Cain could master that sin by doing what God commanded (Genesis 4:1-8).

The sin of Cain reveals the spiritual dimensions of anger. Anger arises when someone disregards our efforts and demands that we obey Yahweh and He will regard our efforts. At that spiritual moment in time, while the anger boils away, sin stands ready to consume you. Even though angry, you still have the power to master your anger, offer the correct sacrifice, and Yahweh will have regard for your offering. If you refuse to obey God, and you persist in your anger, then sin will consume you. When sin consumes you, greater evil will come into your life. Cain killed Abel, all because Cain did not obey God, master temptation to sin, accept the guidance of God, and do the good thing. 

♦ Cain Anger begins with someone else doing something better than we did it.

♦ Cain Anger blossoms when someone disregards our efforts.

♦ Cain Anger builds when Yahweh warns us of sin crouching at the door, because we are angry, and need to obey Yahweh.

♦ Cain Anger boils when we refuse to obey Yahweh, we refuse to master the temptation to sin, then sin consumes us, and then the we kill our brother.

♦ Cain Anger ends when we do good, master the temptation to sin, obey Yahweh, and make an offering pleasing to God.

SOLUTION: AT THE FIRST SIGN OF ANGER, RECOGNIZE THE TEMPTATION TO SIN. DO GOOD, MASTER THE TEMPTATION, OBEY YAHWEH, AND MAKE AN OFFERING PLEASING TO GOD.

 

Simeon and Levi Anger

Jacob had a daughter named Dinah. Shechem, the prince of the land, saw Dinah, took her, and lay with her by force. When Dinah’s brothers, Simeon and Levi,  heard what happened to Dinah, they became very angry (“יִּ֥חַר מְאֹ֑ד“) and sought revenge upon Shechem for raping Dinah. They came up with a plan to kill not only Prince Shechem, but every male in the city. Their plan worked and they killed every male in the city of Shechem for what the prince had done to Dinah. The sons of Jacob took all the wealth of the city, and the little ones and the wives. They also took the flocks and their herds and their donkeys. They took everything, because the prince had defiled Dinah. When Jacob learned what his sons had done, he said they brought great trouble upon him in the land (Genesis 34:1-31). Later, as Jacob blessed his family before dying, he proclaimed that Simeon and Levi were brothers, and their swords were implements of violence. Jacob said that in their anger they slew men, and in their self-will they lamed oxen. Cursed be their anger, for it is fierce. Jacob said he would disperse them in Jacob, and scatter them in Israel (Genesis 49:5-7).

Jacob cursed the anger of Simeon and Levi for their cruelty. They not only killed Prince Shechem, but they also killed every male in the city and lamed oxen. Simeon and Levi show the power of uncontrolled anger seeking revenge. For the sin of one man, they killed all the males in the city, without regard for justice. Simeon and Levi considered the entire city responsible for the rape. Simeon and Levi thought the entire city had treated Dinah like a harlot. The anger of Simeon and Levi caused them to act out of anger and kill many people, and loot an entire city.

Before you take vengeance in anger, remember Simeon and Levi. They lost their father’s blessing for all their offspring, and they endangered their father’s entire family. They let their anger run wild and so they murdered and kidnapped in anger.

♦ Simeon and Levi anger arose from one evil act of rape.

♦ Simeon and Levi anger knew no bounds.

♦ Simeon and Levi anger caused them to murder many men and kidnap many women and children.

♦ Simeon and Levi never experienced the blessing of Jacob, because Jacob despised their cruel anger and so scattered them through out the land.

SOLUTION: BEFORE YOU ACT IN ANGER TO SEEK REVENGE, REMEMBER THAT ANGER CAN CONTROL YOU AND RUN WILD. YOU MAY KILL PEOPLE AND KIDNAP PEOPLE BEFORE YOUR ANGER STOPS. YOU CAN RUIN NOT ONLY YOUR LIFE, BUT LOSE THE BLESSING UPON ALL YOUR CHILDREN AND THEIR CHILDREN.

 

Saul Anger

Saul became king of Israel. Goliath the giant of the Philistines taunted the armies of Saul. A young man named David killed Goliath with his sling and the army of Israel defeated the Philistines. Saul then sent David out to enforce the orders of Saul in the land. David prospered in all that he did for Saul and so Saul set David over all the men of war. All the people and all the servants of Saul were happy with David and his service to Saul. The women came out of the cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet Saul, with joy and musical instruments. They sang and played, “Saul has slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands.” When Saul heard this, he became very angry (“יִּ֨חַר מְאֹ֗ד“) because they ascribed thousands to Saul and ten thousands to David. King Saul said, “Now what more can David have but the kingdom. Saul then looked at David with suspicion from that day on. The next day an evil spirit from God came mightily upon Saul and he raved in his house. As David played the harp for Saul, Saul tried to pin David to the wall with the spear. David escaped twice (1 Samuel 18:1-11). 

Saul had great anger because the people ascribed tens of thousands slain to David, but only thousands to Saul. Saul’s anger led to an evil spirit coming mightily upon Saul. He became raving angry, and tried to kill David with a spear. Saul became afraid of David, because Yahweh had departed from Saul, but Yahweh was with David. Just as Saul feared, many years later Saul died in battle and David became king in his place.

♦ Saul anger arose from people ascribing more glory to David than to Saul as king.

♦ Saul anger opened the door for an evil spirit to cause him to go mad with anger.

♦ Saul anger caused him to try to kill David for no reason, except Saul was angry and suspicious of David.

♦ Saul anger caused the Spirit of Yahweh to depart from Saul.

SOLUTION: BEFORE YOUR ANGER TAKES OVER BECAUSE PEOPLE HONOR SOMEONE ELSE ABOVE YOU, REMEMBER THAT DAVID DID GOD’S WILL AND HONORED SAUL AS KING. BEING KING NEVER MAKES IT RIGHT TO OPPOSE GOD AND HIS WILL. SAUL’S ANGER OPENED THE DOOR TO AN EVIL SPIRIT COMING INTO HIS LIFE AND DRIVING HIM MAD WITH ANGER. SAUL TRIED TO KILL DAVID, BUT GOD SPARED DAVID. THE ANGER OF SAUL CAUSED THE SPIRIT OF YAHWHEH TO DEPART FROM SAUL AS KING.

Abner Anger

After Saul died, war broke out between the house of Saul and the house of David.  Abner, a man of war, was making himself strong in the house of Saul. Saul had a concubine name Rizpah. Ish-bosheth, the son of Saul, charged Abner with sleeping with Rizpah. Abner grew very angry (וַיִּחַר֩ מְאֹ֜ד “) over the words of Ish-bosheth. He recounted that he had shown kindness to the house of Saul, and to his brothers and friends. Abner did not deliver them into the hands of David. Yet, Ish-bosheth charged Abner with guilt concerning Rizpah. Abner was so angry that he swore that he would transfer the kingdom from the house of Saul to the house of David, and so establish the throne of David over all of Israel and over all of Judah. Abner set about to make good on his oath and began to assist David. Abner contacted David and made a covenant with him to deliver all Israel to David. Even so, Joab a commander of David’s army, killed Abner in revenge for Abner killing Joab’s brother, Asahel. Abner changed sides in the war, but still died soon after changing sides over his anger. David mourned Abner’s death (2 Samuel 2:1-39). 

Abner grew angry over the accusation that he slept with the king’s concubine. He was so angry that he vowed to change sides in the war and he made good on his oath. Abner changed sides and joined David. Yet, Joab, a commander of David’s army, held a grudge against Abner. Abner had killed Joab’s brother. So Joab killed Abner. Anger causes many people to change sides, and also leads to more death at the hands of other angry people. Yahweh still transferred the kingdom to David upon the death of Saul later, but Abner sought to hasten that day because he was so angry. Abner’s anger led directly to Abner’s death, at the hands of another very angry man.

♦ Abner anger arises because someone accused him of sexual misconduct.

♦ Abner anger caused him to change sides in the war.

♦ Abner anger put him in danger because another angry man revenged himself upon Abner.

SOLUTION: WHEN PEOPLE SAY THINGS ABOUT YOU THAT MAKE YOU ANGRY, CONTROL YOUR ANGER, SO THAT YOU DO NOT FALL INTO A MUCH DEADLIER SITUATION.

 

 

Uzziah Anger

Uzziah became king of Judah and as long as he sought Yahweh, God prospered him. But when Uzziah became strong, his heart grew proud and he acted corruptly. He entered the temple and burned incense to Yahweh on the altar of Yahweh. The priest then told Uzziah that it was only the priests who are allowed to burn incense to Yahweh, because only the sons of Aaron were consecrated to burn incense. The priest told Uzziah to get out of the temple, for he had been unfaithful to Yahweh and he would have no honor from Yahweh. Uzziah was enraged (“יִּזְעַף֙“) with the priests. While he was enraged, leprosy broke out on his forehead before the priests. Uzziah remained a leper to day of his death, living in a separate house, for he was cut off from the house of Yahweh (2 Chronicles 26:1-23).

♦ Uzziah anger arose from pride in his heart over all that he had accomplished as king.

♦ Uzziah anger burned within him when the priests warned him not to offer incense in the temple.

♦ Uzziah anger caused him to become a leper for the rest of his life, and he lived separated.

SOLUTION: NEVER LET YOUR PRIDE CAUSE YOU TO DO THINGS YOU KNOW YAHWEH HAS FORBIDDEN. DO NOT LET PRIDE CONTROL YOU TO SIN AGAINST YAHWEH. WHEN PRIDE CONTROLS YOU AND YOU SIN, THEN COUNT UPON PEOPLE TO REBUKE YOU ABOUT YOUR SIN. WHEN THEY REBUKE YOU, ACCEPT THE REBUKE. EVEN SO, YOU MAY BECOME VERY ILL AS A RESULT OF YOUR SIN BASED UPON PRIDE.

 

Jonah Anger

Yahweh commanded Jonah the prophet in Israel to proclaim salvation to the city of Nineveh, the ancient enemy of Israel. Jonah hated the people of Nineveh and ran away from God. As Jonah ran away on a boat, a great storm arose and the sailors threw Jonah overboard after he told them that God was mad with him. A great sea monster swallowed Jonah and delivered him to land. He went to Nineveh and proclaimed salvation. The king and the people of Nineveh repented of their sin and turned to Yahweh. Jonah was very angry (“חָ֥רָה“) because he wanted them to die and the go to Sheol. God reminded Jonah that God forgives people who turn to him for salvation, but Jonah remained angry (Jonah 4:1-11).

♦ Jonah anger arose because God told him to proclaim salvation to his enemies.

♦ Jonah anger grew when his enemies turned to God and God had compassion upon them and forgave them.

♦ Jonah remained angry because God forgave the enemies of Jonah.

SOLUTION: WHEN THE DESIRE TO RUN AWAY FROM GOD STARTS TO CONTROL YOU, STOP AND REALIZE THAT YOU CAN NEVER RUN FROM GOD, FOR HE IS EVERYWHERE. WHEN YOU HATE YOUR ENEMIES SO MUCH THAT YOU WANT THEM TO DIE AND GO TO HELL, REMEMBER THAT YOU TOO WERE ONCE THE ENEMY OF GOD. WHEN GOD SAVES YOUR ENEMIES AND FORGIVES THEM, DO NOT LET YOUR ANGER SEPARATE YOU FROM GOD’S BLESSING IN YOUR LIFE.

 

Herod Anger

Herod was king of Israel when Jesus was born. He thought Jesus would be a threat to his dynasty, so he decided to kill the baby Jesus. Some wise men came and met with Herod. He asked them to return to him after they found the baby Jesus. He said he wanted to go and worship the child. After finding the child, the wise men were warned by God not to return to Herod. When Herod found out the wise men were not coming back, Herod became very angry (“ἐθυμώθη λίαν”) and killed all the male children in Bethlehem and all its vicinity, from two years old and younger (Matthew 2:1-18). 

♦ Herod anger arose from his desire to oppose Jesus as King and Savior.

♦ Herod anger grew when he learned the wise men had tricked him.

♦ Herod anger caused him to kill all the male children in Bethlehem.

SOLUTION: WHEN YOU BECOME ANGRY WITH GOD, YOU WILL ALWAYS BE ON THE LOSING END. GOD AND HIS PEOPLE WILL OPPOSE YOU. WHEN YOUR ANGER BECOMES INTENSE, THEN YOU MAY EVEN KILL CHLDREN AND BECOME A MASS MURDERER. NEVER LET YOUR ANGER DRIVE YOU TO KILL PEOPLE AND OPPOSE GOD.

 

Conclusion

Anger often arises from pride and opposition to God’s plan for your life. Your anger may cause you to seek revenge, but it also may place your life in grave danger. Anger leads to temptation, and you give the devil a foothold in your life with your anger. God will always give you a way of controlling your anger and escaping from its control. You never have to let sinful anger control your life, because God can control your anger with His divine power in your life. Pray for God’s power to deliver you from the temptation of anger as soon as you feel the first signs of anger and trust God to deal with your anger before you do something you will regret later. Trust the power of God to deliver you from anger. Pray first, pray fast, trust God.
